The Trinamul Congress-led Memari Municipality effectively collapsed on Monday after 10 of its 15 TMC councillors, including the Chairman, submitted resignation letters to the Executive Officer.
The 16-seat civic body comprises 15 TMC councillors and one Congress councillor. With the latest resignations, the board has lost its quorum. Earlier, Ward 5 councillor Krishnapada Biswas had also stepped down. Now, the remaining nine councillors, including Swapan Bishoie, have tendered their resignations to Debraj Banerjee, the Executive Officer.

Speaking to reporters, Mansura Begum Sekh, councillor of Ward 3, said she was unable to work or serve residents while in office, which prompted her resignation.

Executive Officer Banerjee stated that most councillors cited “personal reasons” in their letters. He added that all resignation letters will be forwarded to the SDM’s office for acceptance.
News of the mass resignation triggered celebrations among BJP workers in Memari, who distributed sweets outside the municipality building. The TMC leadership is yet to comment on the development.
